Don't Make a Dinosaur Sore
an album of children's songs

These songs were all made up in the classrooms of international schools in Japan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia from ideas that the kids produced.  I just asked them what they were studying and we made lists on the chalkboard.  Then we found rhymes and made poems and I added generic sort of kid melodies.  Some of them I had a little bit more input than others.  I'm working on a book to accompany the CD recording that has the music for the tunes and describes 'how-to-do-it'.

Animals Need Water  copyright 1986 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Animals need water, all animals need water / Some live in it, some play in it some drink it and some breathe it / But all animals need water / A fish is an animal with fins and gills / It lives in the lake, not in the hills / It doesn't breathe air it only breathes water / It does what it wants to not what it ought’ ter / A camel is a mammal with a bump on its back / He lives in the desert off the beaten track / He can go for days, then he has to drink water / He does what he wants to not what he ought’ ter / The whale is a mammal living in the sea / She breathes air just like you and me / She sings to her babies in the salty water / She does what she wants to not what she ought’ter / The elephant's the biggest mammal on the land / Uses its trunk like you use your hand / Its trunk is like a straw when it wants to drink water / It does what it wants to not what it ought’ter / The bat is the only mammal that can fly / It plays with the birds...up in the sky / It eats a lot of insects, drinks a tiny bit of water / It does what it wants to not what it ought’ter / The giraffe has a neck that's very, very long / It doesn't have a voice so it can't sing this song / I wonder what it's thinking when it tries to drink water / It does what it wants to not what it ought’ter / Humans are animals that like to think / Their skin is yellow, red or brown or black or pink / They live on the land but they play in the water. / They do what they ought’ ter

Who Can Make a Snowman?  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Who can make a snowman? / I can! She can! She can make a snowman! / First you make a ball of snow, Roll it up and watch it grow / Then you make another ball. Now your snowman's very tall / Who can make a snowman? / I can! He can! He can make a snowman! / Next we add two eyes of coal and a hat that's very old / Carrot or an orange nose draw a smile that really show / Who can make a snowman? / We can! They can! They can make a snowman! / A scarf will keep the snowman warm even in a snow storm / Button's down his front are last  / Wow! Our snowman's finished fast! / Who can make a snowman? / We can! We all can! We all can make a snowman! / Late at night we'll fly away oh! what lovely games we'll play / But next morning all our fun melted by the morning sun / Let's make another snowman! / We can! we can! we can make a snowman! / We can! we can! we can make a snowman!

What's the Matter With Matter?  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
What's the matter with matter? / Solid, liquid or gas / We know that everything is matter, / And everything that's matter has mass / One kind of matter is liquid / Like things we drink from a glass / They spill and pour, flow on the floor, / They don't keep their shape, just like gas / Another kind of matter is gas / Like the air we breathe in and out / Fish get their air from the liquid that they / live in / Whales blow air through their spout / Solids keep their sizes  / Solids keep their shapes / Solids are things like cars and cameras / And books and apples and apes

The Song of the Whales  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
I’d like to sing a song about a rare and wondrous beast / An animal of beauty and distinction / The world’s largest mammal and the keeper of the sea / Though man has forced it slowly toward extinction / From Jonah in the bible to old Ahab's Moby Dick / The whale has been romanticized in story and in song / Now its days are numbered as the modern fishing fleets / Chase them though the seven seas / Killing endlessly, with ease although / The youngest child realizes that this must be wrong / chorus: / I wonder what the whales sing as they sadly swim along / If we could understand their song / Would we want to sing along / What do mom and dad sing to the baby by their side / As bull and cow and calf go on their underwater ride / We watch our world changing with its endless ups and downs / Pollution of our land and sea and air / The animals all disappear and we're not far behind / And people just don't really seem to care / But I think the whales realize and so their song is sad / Their mournful noises echo through the waves / If they could just communicate they'd try to change our ways / And maybe life just wouldn't be so bad / chorus:

The Plant Song  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Let's sing a song about plants. / Let's not sing about ants. / Let's not sing about the birds and bees. / Let's sing a song about plants. / The roots hold up the stem. / The stem holds up the leaves. / The roots drink water from the earth. / Flowers turn into seeds. / Sometimes we eat the stems. / Sometimes we eat the roots. / Sometimes we eat the seeds and leaves. / Sometimes we eat the fruit. / Carrots and beets are roots. / Beans and peas are seeds. / Apples and pumpkins and pears are fruit. / Cabbage and lettuce are leaves. / Trees make houses for us. / Trees make homes for birds. / Trees make wood for toys and chairs. / Trees make paper for words.

Community Helpers  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Community helpers, community helpers / They help you and me, it's their job don't you see / Community helpers, community helpers / They help everybody each day / Firefighters put out big fires firefighters put out big fires / They squirt with their hoses, so we don't burn our noses / Firefighters put out big fires / Postworkers bring us the mail five days a week without fail / In rain or in snow or in sleet or in hail / Postworkers bring us the mail / Doctors give us a shot it hurts, but we thank them a lot / They give us some pills to cure all our ills / We always thank doctors a lot / Dentists fix holes in our teeth dentists fix holes in our teeth / For our smiles they add braces for beautiful faces / Dentists fix holes in our teeth / Police take bad guys away "they help little kids," people say / If we're lost they find mother, big sister or brother / Police take bad guys away / Farmers grow us our food farmers grow us our food / Meat and potatoes and fruit and tomatoes / Farmers grow us our food

The Ballad of Lena Euglena  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson

Lena Euglena was walking down the street / Henry Hydra looked for something to eat / Arnold Ameoba was going to the park / And it was after dark / Arnold Ameoba was thinking of romance / Dreaming of Lena he thought he'd take a chance / And go to the disco to watch his Lena dance / The disco was in France / They sat at a table and drank a soda pop / Two protozooans at the disco hop / Dancing and dancing until they had to stop / Or else they both would drop / While they were resting, they both fell asleep / The horrible hydra quietly did creep / Kidnapped miss Lena and took her to his home / So they could be alone / Arnold woke up and he saw his girl was gone / He knew right away Henry did  / Following footprints he found the hydra's den / Lena was in a pen / We know one ameoba isn't very wise / But Arnold divided and multiplied his size / He drank an Orangina and then set Lena free / They hid behind a tree / The end of the story is easy to explain / Friends will stick together / Through every joy and pain / Two sweetheart protozooans escaped on a train / Henry went down the drain

Friends  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Stay together, play together / When it's sun, or in bad weather / That's what friends are for / Kiss each other, miss each other  / When they're mad, hiss at each other / That's what friends are for / They don't fight, they don't bite / When they're best friends, they might spend the night / Wait for each other, relate to each other  / Communicate, never hate each other / That's what friends are for / Always share, always care  / When times are tough, they might say a prayer / Band together, hold hands together,  / Just like a team they stand together / That's what friends are for / That's what friends are for

Excuse Me!  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Well, I was walking down the street, but I was looking at my feet / Bumped into a sweet thing, ain’t that a funny way to meet
/ I said, "Excuse me". I said, "Excuse me". / I said "Excuse me!" and I walked on down the road. / I was driving my car, but I was dreaming a dream / Ran up on the sidewalk. You shoulda heard the people scream! / I said, "excuse me". I said, "Excuse me". / I said "Excuse me!" and I drove on down the road. / I was at the disco dance, looking for romance / I stepped on her foot. I didn’t stand a chance but... / I said, "Excuse me". I said, "Excuse me". / I said "Excuse me!" and I danced on down the road. / I was flying my fighter plane, trying to ‘keep the peace’. / The wrong button was pushed, and all my missiles were released! / I said, "Excuse me". I said, "Excuse me". / I said "Excuse me!" and I flew on down the road. / I was working in a nuclear plant, making electricity / All the safety systems failed,  / But we’re giving it for Free...radioactivity / I said, "Excuse me". I said, "Excuse me". / I said "Excuse me!" and I walked on down the road

You and Me  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
You and me in a big old boat  / Fingers crossed so it'll stay afloat / Sailing 'round in the ocean blue  / You and me, me and you / You and me going 'round the world  / Time flies by in a crazy whirl / Doing just what we want to do  / You and me, me and you / You and me having so much fun  / Laze away the days in the noonday sun / Living life's the best thing we do  / You and me, me and you / You and me gazing at the stars  / Venus brightly making love to Mars / Evening breezes are blowing through  / You and me, me and you / You and me just trying to survive  / Don't take much to keep our love alive / No deception in two hearts so true  / You and me, me and you

Don't Make a Dinosaur Sore  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Don’t make a dinosaur sore at you / Don’t make him angry, no matter what you do / Smile politely and say, "how do you do?" / And you’ll never make a dinosaur sore / Brontosaurus, the giant of the forest / Is an easy going kind of guy / But he’s big as whale with a long neck and tail / If he steps on you, you’re gonna cry. / Pterodactyl looks like a bird made out of leather / Sailing through the air in any kind of weather / With teeth so sharp but nary a feather / She’ll snatch you up and take you to her nest  / Stegosaurus has a tail and his tail has a brain / But he doesn’t know enough to come out of the rain / He's not very smart, but he's big as a train  / So don’t make a Stegosaurus sore / Triceratops has three horns on his head / So offer him some leaves and keep him well fed / If he pokes you in the butt, your face’ll turn red / Never make a dinosaur sore / We’ve all heard of big boy Tyrannosaurus Rex / If he’s angry he can be a pain in our necks / When he growls at us we’ll pay him our respects  / And we’ll never make a dinosaur sore / Don’t make a dinosaur sore at you / Don’t make him angry, no matter what you do / Smile politely and say, "how do you do?" / And you’ll never make a dinosaur sore

The cook is in the scuppers cleaning out the pots and pans / A parrot on my shoulder and the sky of blue on high / A wooden peg is my right leg, an eye patch is my eye / We are never going home yo ho ho! / Home for us is wave and foam yo ho ho! / We all live a happy life / With no job, no care, no strife / Poking people with a knife yo ho ho! /

Kneedeep Blues  copyright 1991 Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Spoken intro:   "A thieving fox was being chased by a farmer's dogs.  He came to the edge of a river, but he didn't know how to swim.  He confessed to a frog that he was afraid and asked the frog, "How deep is the water?"  The fox drowned. "

How deep is a river? How deep is a lake? / Don't ever ask a frog, it will be a big mistake / A frog always says "Kneedeep!" / A frog always says "Kneedeep!" / A frog always says "Kneedeep!" / How deep is the ocean? How deep is the sea? / Don't ever ask a frog, he'll lie to you and me / A frog always says "Kneedeep!" / A frog always says "Kneedeep!" / A frog always says "Kneedeep!" / It isn't that the frog intends to lie / It's just that his vocabulary's weak / He didn't mean for that old fox to die / But sometimes we make problems / With the words we speak! / How deep is a bayou? How deep is a creek? / Don't ever ask a frog, he lies each time he speaks / A frog always says "Kneedeep!" / A frog always says "Kneedeep!" / A frog always says "Kneedeep!"

Waltz of the Amphibians  copyright 2000  Robert 'One-Man' Johnson
Born in a pond, hatched from an egg. / We are amphibians! / Tadpoles with tails, without any legs / We are amphibians! / Skin without feathers or  scales or hair / We are amphibians! / Swim underwater with gills to make air / We  are amphibians / Then we grow legs and our tails disappear / Tympanic membranes help us to hear / Climb to dry land without any fear / Sacs in our thoraxes change into lungs / Puff out your throats  there are songs to be sung! / Metamorphosis makes us Amphibians! / We are Amphibians! Long live amphibians! / Times of dry weather we sleep in the mud / That's Estivation! / Wintertime finds us with really cold blood / That's Hibernation! / In Springtime we wake up and don't hesitate / Down to the water to cruise for a date / We choose the right partner and merrily mate / Back in the pond, new eggs are laid / That's how every frog family is made / We are Amphibians! Long live amphibians! / We are Amphibians! Long live amphibians!
